Kobolds Chaos, Chapter 3, Book I

Playing in the Pandemic!

With some precautions we returned to playing once a month. This chapter comprised two play sessions.

The Next Morning:

The goblin caves convinced the band that they needed more power to be successful against the Caves of Chaos. The feline druid Ambiguity disappeared into the mountainous woods on a mysterious errand while the rest of the band chose to hire some mercenaries and attempt to kobold's caverns. The taciturn ranger Gyr left as well, explaining he had to scout elsewhere in the area, but told the band that his hawk might bring them word, or an ally called "Jack-be-Nimble."

Corvus (priest of Pholtus),  Zask (mysterious spellcaster) , Blacktoof (half-orc barbarian), and Evryhss (elvish adventurer) took on a new partner, Redd, a dwarven paladin. Then they hired four mercenary men-at-arms - Skargard, Jimbo, Maliin, and Kako.

They journeyed to the kobold caverns, hidden amongst thickets on a hillside. Almost at once they were ambushed by vicious kobolds just outside the cavern entrance. They managed to defeated them and then they started inside...

Sneaking inside, they uncovered a pit trap with a spinning cover by falling into it, fortunately taking little damage. They also discovered kobold sentries and awakened a horde of rats from the kobold's midden cave.

The fight against the kobolds was brutal, with the trap creating an unstable floor until a stone shape  spell sealed it. The kobolds and rats fought as a team, managing to kill two of the hired men-at-arms (Skargard and Jimbo) and seriously wounded nearly all of the band.

Small but doughty kobolds and the vicious
giant rats.
Most of the band pulled back from the cave, but Evrhyss was determiend to get someting of value and slipped back down after the rats, discovering the midden cave where the swarm of rats and he bucthered each other. The rats were all killed and he was left unconscious and bleeding but he was pulled from the field by Redd and healed. Wounded and exhausted, the band fled back to the Keep.

The band was determined to finish off the kobolds, but despite generous payouts to the families of their slain hirelings, they found no one wish to hire on with them any - the risk was simply too great.

But more adventurers had arrived at the Keep, and Ambiguity had returned as well, with a mountain lion companion.  Sheila, a paladin of Corvus had been sent by his superiors to assist Corvus, and Redd was joined by a female dwarven scout from his clan's hold, Olga. Another dwarven warrior, Morbro, joined the band as did a female barbarian warrior, Gozara. Last, a curious nobleman, Sir Percy Cleghorn Stanley Hobar joined. He described himself as an artificer and had developed many curious tools, including some large, wheeled pavises which he claimed would make clear the caverns much easier.

Thus reinforced, the band returned to the Caves.  A long the way they had a run in with a bear, and they met Gyr's friend, Jack-Be-Nimble, who turned out to be a Brownie.

Jack, despite a rude welcome from the band, provided some cryptic information and then disappeared.

Now 11 strong and backed with the mountain lion and utilizing Sir Percy's pavises, the band

methodically moved through the kobold warrens, slaughtering their foes despite kobold cleverness, teamwork, and even some shamanic magic. In the end, only a handful of kobold young escaped the party's vengeance.

After looting the kobold lair, the band marched back in triumphant to the Keep, though tales of slaughtering kobolds didn't garner them much adulation or respect in the taproom.
